At Paddox, we aspire to provide a rich and engaging PE curriculum that inspires and generates a positive attitude towards health and fitness for life. We believe that physical education improves children’s concentration and self-confidence which is weaved through a child’s whole school life and beyond, allowing every child to reach their full potential.

Physical Education at Paddox provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, collaborative and able to tackle different challenges as individuals, in groups and in teams.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a wealth of different sporting, fitness, health and well-being opportunities which are enhanced by our extensive extra-curricular offer.

At Paddox we provide a rich and engaging PE curriculum that inspires and generates a positive attitude towards health and fitness for life. We believe that physical education improves children’s concentration and self-confidence which is woven through a child’s whole school life and beyond, allowing every child to reach their full potential. Physical Education at Paddox provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, collaborative and able to tackle different challenges in a variety of situations.

Our curriculum is designed to provide a wealth of different sporting, fitness, health and well-being opportunities as well as delivering content that will prepare children for participation in school competitions. These experiences are enhanced by our extensive extra-curricular activities. We ensure every child is engaged in physical activity by tracking participation in clubs and sporting events and proactively offer children opportunities to engage them in physical education. We understand the importance of key skills in KS1 that provide the foundation for development in physical education in to KS2. We have close links to the School Games Partnership to enrich our curriculum and provide excellent competitive and inclusive sporting opportunities for every child. Our links with external sports organisations, such as HotShots basketball and Rugby and Northampton Athletics Club, allow every child to experience a flavour of sport through taster sessions and the opportunity to sign post them to participate in sport beyond school.

• PE is taught twice a week by the class teacher or a PE specialist teacher.
• PE skills are taught through the use of Complete PE and Rising Stars Champions resources, which are in-line with the National Curriculum and are used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Some lessons are also planned and delivered by a PE specialist teacher, again in-line with the National Curriculum.
• Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group. Each class has access to at least two hours of high-quality physical activity every week, made up of PE sessions, swimming, lunchtime sports sessions and other enrichment activities.
• Units of work are set out in our long-term plan. Lessons also support and prepare children for sporting events within a year group.
• Children are given the opportunity to practise skills in lessons in a variety of ways with each lesson building upon previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. The clear progression of skills allows them to be practiced and used in a range of different contexts.
• Children possess a wide range of physical abilities so we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child.
• Children attend whole year group sporting events, such as a tag rugby festival in Year 3 and 6, ensuring that every child from year 1 to 6 has the opportunity to use taught skills and compete. Every child also participates in intra-school competitions at least three times a year.
• Collected data allows us to highlight any children who are least active, disengaged and pupil premium and offer appropriate sporting opportunities.
• Year 5 children learn to be sports leaders by supporting sports events for the younger children by leading, coaching and scoring.
• Children learn to swim in Year 3 and receive booster swimming lessons if they do not reach the appropriate swimming standard.

We aim to inspire and motivate every child to engage in PE lessons and other sporting opportunities we offer beyond this. We aim for each child to have a good understanding of health and fitness and to develop their own responsibility for it. Our curriculum aims to offer opportunities to achieve success in sport but also what we are able to learn from failure. We want our pupils to develop in to happy, healthy young people that have been equipped with the skills to continue a positive relationship with sport and physical fitness throughout their lives. Children at Paddox Primary School make good progress in PE and are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.
