At Paddox Primary School, we believe that play is a fundamental right of every child and an essential part of their learning, development and wellbeing. Through our OPAL programme, we are committed to creating a high-quality, inclusive outdoor environment where every child feels valued, engaged and inspired to explore, create, imagine and collaborate. We recognise that children learn best through rich, varied and purposeful play experiences that develop resilience, independence, creativity, communication skills and teamwork.

Our vision is for playtimes to be a meaningful and valued part of the school day, providing opportunities for children of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to build friendships, solve problems, manage risk, develop confidence and experience the joy of child-led play.

To achieve this, we take a whole-school, strategic approach to outdoor play, developing engaging play zones, embedding loose parts play, providing extensive staff training and ensuring daily access to a broad range of open-ended opportunities. Regular audits, action planning and pupil voice help shape ongoing improvements, while collaboration with families, midday supervisors and the wider community enhances our provision.

As a result, OPAL has significantly improved children’s engagement, behaviour and wellbeing, leading to increased independence, stronger relationships and more sustained, purposeful play. The inclusive environment supports the development of key curriculum skills, including communication, problem-solving and physical development, while contributing positively to the school’s ethos, culture and overall quality of education.
