What are Fundamental British Values?
At Paddox Primary School, our vision is to create a community where every child feels valued, respected and supported to achieve their very best. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, included and have a strong sense of belonging.
In line with guidance from the Department for Education (DfE), we actively promote the Fundamental British Values throughout school life. These values help children develop as confident, responsible and respectful members of society, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
The Fundamental British Values are:
Democracy – understanding that everyone has a voice and that opinions can be shared and listened to respectfully.
The Rule of Law – recognising the importance of rules, laws and responsibilities in keeping people safe and ensuring fairness.
Individual Liberty – developing independence, making informed choices and understanding personal rights and freedoms.
Mutual Respect – treating others with kindness, courtesy and consideration, regardless of differences.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – appreciating and respecting people from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths and those with no faith.
By embedding these values through our curriculum, assemblies, wider opportunities and everyday interactions, we foster a caring and inclusive environment where every child feels they belong and can flourish.
The Department for Education places a duty on schools to promote Fundamental British Values and prepare pupils for life in modern Britain. At Paddox Primary School, we embrace this responsibility through our curriculum, personal development programme and daily school experiences.
We are committed to creating a welcoming, safe and inclusive school community where every individual is valued. Children are encouraged to be thoughtful, respectful and considerate members of society who understand their responsibilities to themselves and others. When attitudes or behaviours do not reflect our shared values, we use these moments as opportunities for learning, reflection and growth.
Our staff model the highest standards of professionalism, care and integrity. Together, we create a culture built upon positive relationships, mutual respect and a shared commitment to helping every child succeed.
Continued below outlines how Fundamental British Values are promoted across school life at Paddox Primary School.
At Paddox Primary School, pupils are encouraged to understand that their opinions matter and that they can contribute positively to their school community.
Children have opportunities to share their views through pupil leadership roles, school councils and classroom discussions. Elections for leadership positions provide valuable experience of democratic processes and demonstrate how individuals can influence change through participation and representation.
Across the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to discuss ideas, explore differing viewpoints and develop the confidence to express their opinions respectfully. Whether in English, history, religious education or personal development lessons, children learn that listening carefully to others is just as important as sharing their own views.
Through our DREAM values of Determination, Respect, Empathy, Aspiration and Mindfulness, children learn how to collaborate, negotiate, compromise and make decisions fairly. These experiences help pupils appreciate the importance of equality, inclusion and active citizenship.
By providing meaningful opportunities for participation and leadership, we help children develop the skills and confidence needed to contribute positively to society.
Understanding the importance of rules and laws is an integral part of life at Paddox Primary School.
From an early age, children learn why rules exist and how they help create a safe, fair and supportive environment. Classroom expectations are developed collaboratively, enabling pupils to understand their responsibilities and the impact of their actions on others.
Our behaviour policy and school expectations are consistently applied by all staff, helping children understand the importance of accountability, fairness and making positive choices.
Learning is further enhanced through visits, visitors and wider curriculum opportunities. Pupils learn about the roles played by organisations such as the police, fire service and other community professionals, helping them understand how laws and public services contribute to society.
Online safety education forms an important part of our curriculum. Children are taught about responsible digital behaviour, online rights and responsibilities, privacy and staying safe online. We also provide guidance and support for families to help reinforce these messages beyond school.
Through personal, social and health education, children learn about wider aspects of keeping themselves and others safe, including road safety, healthy choices and age-appropriate understanding of risk.
By promoting responsibility, fairness and respect for rules, we help pupils understand their role in maintaining safe and thriving communities.
At Paddox Primary School, we encourage children to develop independence, confidence and self-belief so that they can make informed choices and take responsibility for their actions.
We provide a supportive environment where pupils feel safe to express their opinions, explore their interests and celebrate their individuality. Children are encouraged to develop resilience, reflect on their learning and understand that mistakes are valuable opportunities for growth.
Our personal development curriculum supports pupils in building self-awareness, emotional wellbeing and confidence. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, recognise risks and seek support when needed.
We actively encourage pupils to take ownership of their learning by setting goals, making choices and reflecting on their progress. Opportunities within and beyond the classroom help children develop leadership, creativity and problem-solving skills.
A strong culture of inclusion underpins all aspects of school life. We promote equality of opportunity and challenge stereotypes, ensuring every child feels able to pursue their interests, talents and aspirations without limitation.
Through these experiences, pupils develop the confidence and independence needed to become successful learners and responsible citizens.
Respect for others is at the heart of life at Paddox Primary School. We are proud of our inclusive school community and celebrate the diversity of backgrounds, cultures, experiences and beliefs represented within it.
Children are taught the importance of kindness, empathy and understanding through everyday interactions and planned learning opportunities. Positive relationships are promoted throughout the school, helping pupils appreciate that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about a wide range of faiths, cultures and traditions. Through religious education, assemblies, themed events and wider curriculum studies, pupils develop an understanding of the beliefs and values of others while reflecting on their own.
We encourage children to ask questions, challenge stereotypes and engage thoughtfully with different perspectives. Through these experiences, pupils learn to value diversity and recognise the contribution that people from different backgrounds make to society.
Visitors, educational visits and links with the wider community enrich children’s understanding of the world beyond their immediate surroundings and help them develop greater awareness, acceptance and appreciation of others.
By promoting mutual respect and tolerance throughout all aspects of school life, we nurture compassionate, open-minded young people who are well prepared to contribute positively to modern Britain.
This approach reflects Paddox Primary School’s commitment to its DREAM values: Determination, Respect, Empathy, Aspiration and Mindfulness, ensuring that every child feels welcomed, valued and empowered to succeed.
