At Paddox Primary School, we aim to foster a love of writing while developing the transcription and composition skills children need to become confident, effective communicators. We believe that secure literacy skills are essential for success across the curriculum and beyond.
Our text-based curriculum promotes a culture in which children take pride in their writing, write accurately and creatively, and adapt their language and style to suit different purposes and audiences. We recognise that every child’s journey as a writer is unique; therefore, all pupils are immersed in high-quality literature and meaningful experiences that inspire writing and develop cultural capital. Whatever their starting point, every child is encouraged to engage in and enjoy the writing process.
Our Writing Curriculum provides purposeful opportunities for reading, discussion and writing. Through explicit teaching of grammar, vocabulary, language features and text structure, pupils learn how to write effectively across a range of genres. Writing is taught through a two-week cycle. During the first week, children explore model texts and develop the knowledge and skills required for the genre. Over the course of the second week, they then apply these skills independently into their own writing.
The writing process is taught explicitly. Children analyse model texts, practise key writing skills and develop the vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures needed to write successfully for a specific audience and purpose. They are encouraged to edit, proofread and improve their work, taking ownership of their writing and developing lifelong independent writing skills.
Through our structured and scaffolded approach, children become increasingly confident and proficient writers. Teaching is carefully adapted to meet the needs of all learners and is never delivered in isolation. We strive to develop articulate, imaginative communicators who understand the value of writing in everyday life and can clearly explain how their learning supports their future aspirations.
